The Unrepent Wolf of Wall Street: A Controversy Between No Moral and Great Filmmaking

the wolf of wall street review

Leonardo DiCaprio has once again shown his charismatic side in this movie apart from the previous movie, The Great Gatsby. The three hour long movie surely show a punch in the wild lifestyle of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) who got a little fortune through selling of penny stocks and starting up a company called Stratton Oakmont.

What is Quaalude Actually ?

Quaalude is a brand name for Methaquolone which has been noted by Indian researchers in the 1950s. It is being use as a hypnotic, for treatment of insomnia and as a sedative and muscle relaxant. However, the medicine has been abused by users as an illegal recreational drug, especially popular in the late 1960 and early 1970s. It was manufactured in USA under the trade name Rorer and "Lemmon" with numbers 714 stamped on the pills which is often referred as 714s, "Lemmons" or "Lemmon 7s". One of the funniest moment and great acting by Lenardo DiCaprio was when Donnie offers Jordan a powerful brand of Quaaludes, which they thought the pills are old and seems to lose their potency and they took huge doses to compensate. The Quaaludes kick in with overwhelming effect while Jordan was at the country club calling his private investigator, Bo Dietl, who has warned him that his house phone was being tapped by FBI and insisted that Jordan to call him back using a public pay-phone. He had to climb all the way over the stairs to reach his sporty car before having a disastrous journey back home.

Some Facts About This Movie
  • It is one of the movie that uses the most word "fuck".
  • This is a fucking real life story.
  • Audience responded that the movie has actually raised the status of Jordan Belfort as a better man despite his scams has caused many loss of family and fortune.
Conclusion

I bet this is one of the best movies I have watched recently and the Leonardo has definitely given his best acting skills and efforts put into this movie. I did not know that it was a true story until I searched for the name "Jordan Belfort". There are controversies as some of the victims think the movie has given him a good image instead portraying the truth to the audience. However, I will still give 7/10 for the acting.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Movie Review

To be honest, I was not really interested with the movie in the first sight of the poster as it seems that the show was boring, but fortunately my girl friend wanted to catch this movie before the screening ends.

Movie Information
The story plot was from James Thurber's 1939 classic story from a day-dreamer, Walter Mitty (direct and star Ben Stiller) who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his current working company, the "Life" magazine had a merger, his job and co-worker, Cheryl Melhoff (Kristen Wiig) are in jeopardy because of a lost film No. 25 which he thought his long working parter photographer, Sean O'Connell (Sean Penn) did not actually send him and he embarked on a journey to track him down.

Imagination VS Reality
The show mixed the elements of imagination from Walter Mitty's mind and his real embarkment to track down the photographer. Though in the first few scenes was hilarious, but the later part of the movie when he was on the journey has been a confusion if what he has done was just his imagination or reality.

Great Scene !
In Singapore, you would not even had a chance to get a great overview of the entire landscape without a building (we are quite over building at the moment). Simply loved the sights of the sea, Greenland, Himalayas and also the Snow Leopard.

See more of their trailer at their official website, www.waltermitty.com

Conclusion
My money is definitely well spent on this movie. The plot I would say that my tickets and pop corn are well spent and though I did slipped off into my dreaming state for a while (maybe I was too tired the night before), but the movie did refresh me on the daily life that we are living in right now, and the interesting things that we are missing out in our life. Rating 8/10

The Legend of Hercules Movie Review

Movie Information

King Amphitryon's (Scott Adkins) thirst for power and warmongering has disgusted Queen Alcmene who prays Hera, wife of Zeus for guidance. The Queen agreed to bore the son of Zeus, a half-god and half-man blessed with extraordinary strength in order to save the world and her people. While the King was celebrating his victory, Zeus visited the Queen and soon gives birth to Hercules, but was named Alcides (Kellan Lutz) by the King. 20 years later, Hercules fell in love with Hebe (Gaia Weiss), princess of Crete. Jealousy grown in his older brother, Iphicles (Liam Garrigan) and ask the King to bethroth Hebe as her wife and sending Hercules to Eqypt to a planned assassination with a small army of soldiers.

Hercules went through slavery with Captain Sotiris (Liam McIntrye) and fooled the vicious promotor (Stefan Shterev) to send them to Greece in order to fight an arena battle with six undefeated gladiators for fame and money. While Hercules defeated the six gladiators, Captain Sotiris gathered the rest of the army under the King to be under his command after the King began using mercenaries to demand money from smaller villages.

A fight broke out between the King and Hercules which eventually Hercules prevailed in the war, but losing his loved one, Hebe, while trying to prevent his Iphicles from hurting him. A prophecy that Hera has mentioned to him in a rundown house.

The Six Undefeated Gladiators Died Too Fast ?

I think this part of the movie was quite unjustifiable since it has been said that they have been undefeated, killing them was much easier in the movie than Hercules fighting in the ring cage and two monsters earlier on in the movie. Maybe they are rushing to end the show soon.

Conclusion

Good movie for men who loves the fight, women for Hercules' great body. The movie was rather fast pace and fighting was throughout the movie that keep you out from boredom. However, throughout the show, Zeus did not show face at all. Weird. Rating: 7/10

The Ides of March - Political Games

A great masterpiece directed by George Clooney, show what is the true politics about.

The Game
Governor Mike Morris (George Clooney) is running for presidency against Senator Pullman in a Democratic primary. Both sides has been campaigning aggressively, with Stephen Myers (Ryan Gosling) and Paul Zara (Philip Seymour Hoffman) aiding Morris in his slight lead over Senator Pullman.

Setting Up
Senator Pullman's head campaign manager Tom Duffy (Paul Giamatti) calls Stephen Myers one day to arrange for a meetup intention was to engage him into helping Pullman, not knowing that Tom Duffy is trying to jeopardize his job in the campaign. After the meet up, Stephen Myers was harrassed by the media and it was Paul Zara who informed the media. Now Morris lost a good helping hand while Pullman has one lesser opponent to face. A WIN-WIN situation for Pullman and great move by Tom Duffy.

Gambling On The Leverage
Stephen Myers was totally devastated while he is out of job and Tom Duffy initial intention to pull him over was just a plot. The woman he loved committed suicide and he was nowhere to go. However, he does know Governor Morris's secret, a leverage which he forced Paul Zara out of job and becomes the next big man to Governor Morri's

It is the movie that shows the real politics in politics world. Perhaps this is why the cast received a combined 13 Academy Awards nominations, 3 Academy Awards, 23 Golden Globe nominations and 6 Golden Globe awards.

We have some old cast, but there are also new cast which freshen up the movie totally. I mean it is like, who is that gal over there ? (You will know what i meant in the next post on Fast Five). Enjoy the trailer.

The Lincoln Lawyer - NTGUILTY

After sacrificing some hours of sleep watching this midnight movie, it is proven to be worthwhile to be late for work next day (oops, hope my boss does not see this post). Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a low-level criminal defense attorney representing gangsters, mobs and addicts to get away with crimes with his different approach to justice while he earn his stash easily through his own ways.

If you can see from the poster, the car plate on the Lincoln he sat on wrote "NTGUILTY", already shows you this guy can be quite a punk though he is a attorney. Liked his attitude and style of handling people in the show.

He was right cool until he signed on to defend rich real estate agent Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe) for an case of assaulting a prostitute. This case slowly brings him to link back one of his clients, whom though pleaded he was innocent, yet Haller persuaded him to plead guilty to reduce his sentence from death penalty to life sentence.

This is a great show to watch and the twist is fabulous. I better stop here else all the excitement will be gone by the end of the post. You can catch a glimpse of the trailer right below here. I would rate this movie 4.5/5.

End my day with Pizza and 2 Movies

Today seems to be a blue Monday, rain drizzling throughout the evening, which is a very good weather to slack on the crouch and watch TV. Decided to off early today and met up with Daniel to have our dinner together. Maybe because of the rain, we decided to stay indoors and ordered Domino's Pizza. Not really tasty though.

Watching from my Macbook in da Kitchen

The first show we were watching is called 喋血孤城 or Death and Glory in Changde. The plot of this movie is based on a 1943 Japanese attack on a China's province called Changde 常德. The commander (cast by Ray Lui, 吕良伟) was to defend the city from attacks by the Japanese forces till reinforcements arrive. With only a army strength of 8,000 soldiers, the Chinese are to defend against a 30,000 strong Japanese army.

The lady in the poster (cast by Ann, 安以轩) was the wife of a brave lieutenant (cast by Yuan Wen Kang, 袁文康) who sacrifices himself during a fight by holding and blowing himself and the Japanese enemies together with a bomb in hand.

The commander also received a telegram from the HQ that they are to defend the city with their lives, meaning "Do or Die with the City" 与城共存亡. Nice show to watch, but I think the next one will be even better.
Main Actress: 安以轩 aka Ann, Source: Sina
Despite the late hour, we decided to continue our movie marathon. This time round is a English show which Daniel mentioned he has watched during his sis church services.  This movie is based on the best-selling book "The Ultimate Gift" by Jim Stovall.

The story starts with the death of the oil tycoon Howard 'Red' Stevens, His whole family gathered at the office of his Lawyer, partner and friend, Mr. Theopillies 'Ted' Hamilton for reading his will. While everyone is expecting his inheritance, he left nothing much to them except his grandson, which he has a series of "gifts" for him.

The grandson of a Billionaire, Jason Steven (cast by Drew Fuller) hate his granddad Howard 'Red' Stevens for not telling him what has caused the death of his own father and apparently Jason Steven is only interested in the inheritance in the first place. In order to get the gifts, his granddad devised a plan called the "The Ultimate Gift" which will put Jason into a crash course on life and upon completion of each task, he will receive his "gifts".

Throughout the journey of discoveries, he met with a lady Alexia (cast by Ali Hillis) and her Leukemic daughter (cast by Abigail Breslin) which changes Jason perspective of life and playboy lifestyle completely. This is highly recommended and I think I would have to watch it for a 2nd time, definitely.

After watching the 2nd movie, I suddenly feels that I am actually living in a comfort zone and there was much more things which I could have done to make my life a better one. I am like passing day by day without a strong goal in mind and almost all things which I have done seems relentless useless, either to others or myself. Perhaps it is time to push myself out of the comfort zone and get some war before it is really too late.....

Oh man, it is already 3 in the morning, should get some sleep else I doubt I would be able to wake up early tomorrow morning. Hey Daniel, it is time you should train up your muscles liaoz...

Best Indian Movie I have Watched - Slumdog Millionaire

When I was young, I remembered that Indian movies broadcasting in the TV and it is always about dancing, but yet I can spent hours finishing the movie. I could not recall when was the last time I did that stunt, but I managed to watch one Indian movie and it is unexpectedly interesting.

The movie is called Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle and co-directed by Loveleen Tandan. The plot of the story is about an 18 years old orphan, named Jamal Malik (Casted Dev Patel) who was to about to experience the biggest day of his life and one question away from winning 20,000,000 rupees in India's "Who wants to be a Millionare ?" But he was arrested a night before the game show as the police suspected the uneducated orphan cheating in the game show.

As Jamal answers the questions, it actually did a flashback on the events which he have encountered in the path of his life. It talks about racism, child peddlers, children working force and forced to steal in order to continue with his life. I think that this might be reflecting on the the real life of orphans in India, and the problem which are faced in most of the poorer countries. The movie also includes a blend of brotherhood and persistent love.

I would give this movie a 6-star rating. Believe me, you would not regret watching it. More information, try reading Sound On Sight Blog's comments. (I gotten the above picture from there as well)

Won 4 Golden Globes. 31 wins and 37 nominations. Find out more at IMDb.

I watched it online and if you are interested, here is the link for Slumdog Millionaire.
